This morning, the cacophony of construction work is softer than usual on the streets of Montreal, and that’s because a good portion of the sounds of hammers, generators, and circular saws comes from the construction of wooden patios on the city’s sidewalks.
Montreal, a city that is encased in ice like a snow globe for six months of the year, enters spring with a few weeks of rain, sunshine, and strong winds.
Outdoor patios reopen in mid-April in Montreal
The terraces are open, during a year when winter and summer are perfectly divided, between April 15 and November 15.
This year, winter was (too) long, but now that spring is here, even if it rains a lot, we’ll be able to take advantage of the sunny days between the showers to go out for a coffee or a beer on a terrace.
The terraces are under construction, and sometimes even finished, quietly waiting for a warm, sunny day. As soon as the weather is nice, we recommend going out for a stroll and stopping at the nearest terrace that’s basking in the sun.

On the terrace…
We recommend reading a book on a terrace if you’re working from home, because soaking up the sun’s rays (with SPF 50 sunscreen, of course) will do a world of good for all the pale Montrealers who didn’t go on vacation during Spring Break.
There’s really nothing more romantic than having an afternoon to kill (which happens less and less often as we get older) and spending itin a café or on a terrace, lost in a book.
