There’s really nothing more romantic than having an afternoon to kill (which happens less and less as we get older) and spending it in a café or on a terrace, immersed in a book.
In recent years, we have seen a global return to reading books ( even if it’s romantasy like “Heated Rivalry,” even if it’s read on a Kindle or as an audiobook). Girls read Nobel Prize-winning literature like Dua Lipa, millennials reread “Wuthering Heights” in the bath.
In Montreal, where the indoor-outdoor spaces of cafes and relaxation spots are transformed into art, it can sometimes be a little difficult to find a place to sit for an hour or two and just read a book…

Montreal’s Silent Bookclub celebrated its second anniversary during the holiday season. The formula is very successful, and every month the Silent Bookclub meets in a café or bar for an evening that includes…
- a drink or a coffee, an hour of quiet reading
- a discussion, free time
- a voluntary book exchange
Participants in the monthly book club are encouraged to bring their own book to read, as well as books they have finished so they can exchange them with others. In addition to the spirit of sharing, which is always enriching—especially when it comes to books— it’s a way to read more without buying a new book every month. And, yes, it’s also a good way to flirt.

At Joie de Livres, you lose track of time because of the huge selection of books (with a focus on romance and genre fiction) and the café with its jewel-toned velvet banquettes… There are books in English and French.

Library cards are free for all Montreal residents —we’re starting with this because not only did we not know about it, but we’re kicking ourselves for it. Sign up now.
At the iconic BAnQ, which has one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, you can read, work, or just borrow a DVD… It’s retro and quite romantic to borrow a book from the library.
