Halloween is a whole season in Quebec, and in Montreal it’s a whole month of events and signature cocktails with names like “boo-on-the-rocks” and “zombie-tini.” Inshort, October is one of the best months of the year.
Montrealers compete to outdo each other with their creative Halloween decorations in the side streets and the city’s most beautiful neighborhoods, and for an afternoon stroll, it’s quite enchanting to check out during this very chilly month of October.

IN WESTMOUNT…

Westmount is one of Montreal’s most upscale neighborhoods, and definitely one of the wealthiest and oldest. Take a stroll up the hillside streets to see the decorations on the magnificent Victorian homes (which are probably all haunted).
We’ll also stop by the Westmount Library’s greenhouses, which are delightfully elaborate and a bit eerie when the weather is gray.

IN NDG (NOTRE-DAME-DE-GRÂCE)

NDG is a very family-friendly neighborhood with beautiful semi-detached homes and a great atmosphere. It’s almost like a scene from an ’80s movie, with kids riding bikes, pumpkins sporting creepy smiles, and plenty of colors and lights in the evening.
The most creative residents sometimes build small, themed haunted houses for the kids to visit on Halloween night.

ON THE MONT-ROYAL PLATEAU…

Another very family-friendly neighborhood with rows of duplexes and triplexes lining streets flanked by tall, century-old trees, the Plateau is the perfect place to stroll on a beautiful late-October day…
Here, the decorations are more understated but the atmosphere is very much alive, and it’s the charm of the Plateau that makes Halloween feel so distinctly Montreal.

IN ROSEMONT AND LA PETITE-PATRIE

A little further north of the Plateau lies the realm of the green side streets. There, you have to wander through the streets to see the decorations set up in the gardens—little worlds created by the area’s most creative Montrealers.
Head out in the evening to see the lights inside the pumpkins lining the wide, just-dark-enough side streets.

IN VILLERAY…

Villeray is a kid’s paradise for Halloween. It’s an ultra-family-friendly neighborhood, with plenty of mini haunted houses, themed green alleys, and one of the best places in Montreal to take the kids trick-or-treating on Halloween night.
