During Montreal’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade, we’re all a little Irish… This year marks the 200th parade for this celebration of Ireland’s patron saint and Irish culture.
The first time St. Patrick’s Day was celebrated in Canada was in 1759, by Irish soldiers from the Montreal Garrison after the conquest of New France. (Mind you, we’re talking about land that was stolen from North American natives, but that’s how the story was written at the time).
The first St. Patrick’s Day parade, organized by the United Irish Societies of Montreal, took place in 1824. Since then, there’s been one every year… and this year it’s the 200th!
What is the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Montreal?
The first Irish arrived in Montreal in the late 17th century, in search of religious freedom and a slice of the New World cake. Montreal’s Irish population is an integral part of the city’s construction and history, including the iconic Victoria Bridge linking the island to the mainland.
The parade is a celebration of Irish culture and presence in Montreal, honoring its soldiers, its faith, its resilience and its heritage. Every year, thousands march and over 500,000 spectators gather to celebrate (in kilts and green, of course).
Dancers, bands, military personnel and the city’s Irish associations gather and march with performances, floats and activities that honor Irish culture. The parade also has a Queen, who was elected in November and will parade on a dedicated float, as well as a Grand Marshal.
It’s one of the longest parades in North America, rivaling those of New York and Boston in terms of participation and size.
Kiss an Irishman, drink a pint of beer in one of the pubs along the parade route and enjoy with family and friends!
When is the parade?
This year, it’s Sunday, March 16, 2025, from noon to 3am.
Where is it?
The parade starts at noon , at the corner of Fort and De Maisonneuve streets, and ends at Jeanne-Mance and De Maisonneuve streets.
We’ll be there and, of course, we’ll be wearing green!
