New year, new you. In January, the city of Montreal is covered in a blanket of white, icy and – depending on our level of optimism – pure. Like a blank page.
In January, the days are getting longer (the winter solstice has passed) and we’re in the heart of the ski season – but since we live in the city, we have to keep busy.
We can take time to optimize ourselves – with sport, new hobbies, lots of reading and renewed enthusiasm to get out of our comfort zone. And we get plenty of sleep.
Fortunately, Montrealers are kings of the long winter months and of serotonin to get us through the cold snaps. And, of course, we don’t forget to eat clementines every day to avoid catching the flu.
Here’s our calendar for January 2026 in Montreal…

*skating (artistic)

In winter in Montreal, you can skate just about anywhere in the city, on one of the 220 outdoor rinks – either natural or refrigerated from December to April.
For those who don’t know how to skate, this is a great opportunity to learn. For those who want to get moving but don’t have time to leave Montreal on weekends, it’s the perfect winter sport.
And to make sure the season is a magical one (and not just cold and long), we recommend these 5 sublime skating rinks for an outing with friends, lovers or family in Montreal.
*cross-country skiing in the city on a free trail
Skiing is expensive. And in addition to equipment – including boots, skis and quarter-zip –and transportation, (cross-country) ski passes can be a real drain on the wallet.
Happy January in Montreal!
