Montreal, like New York, is a city of cinema. Niche films, slightly offbeat films, romantic Friday-night movies, American films shot on the streets of the Old Port to mimic a street in Warsaw in the 1980s.
Montrealers love their movie theaters—especially their independent ones—and this fall marks the 25th anniversary of one of our favorite theaters: the Cinéma Beaubien.
To celebrate, there will be $9 screenings, Quebec film classics, and a big block party.

THE CINÉMA BEAUBIEN
Technically, the Cinéma Beaubien is much older than the 25 years it’s celebrating this fall—it opened in 1937. After being sold to Canadian Odeon Theatres in 1941, it was renamed “Cinéma Daupin” in 1965 and remained the Dauphin until 2001.
Due to the harsh realities of capitalism, the Cineplex Odéon group decided to close it in 2001. But the theater is at the heart of the neighborhood and deeply loved—there was a massive mobilization of citizens, businesses, and politicians to save it. In September 2001, the theater reclaimed its original name and quietly reopened.
Last year, the Cinéma Beaubien joined the CINÉMA CINÉMA network of independent theaters in Montreal. It remains one of the prettiest and most charismatic movie theaters in Montreal.

“OUR NEIGHBORHOOD, OUR MOVIE THEATER”
To honor its history, the theater is screening 12 Quebec films—now considered classics—that have contributed to its longevity. It’s a small token of gratitude from the theater—some excellent karma for the next 25 years—and a lot of bittersweet nostalgia for us.
The lineup includes *La Grande Séduction* (2003) by Jean-François Pouliot, *Incendies* (2010) by Denis Villeneuve, *Mommy* (2014) by Xavier Dolan, and *Chien de Garde* (2018) by Sophie Dupuis.
On September 18 and 19, 2026, there will be a big neighborhood party at Molson Park, organized by the Beaubien-Est Merchants’ Association. There will be activities, a concert by Bon Enfant, and a great atmosphere.
The celebration will wrap up with an outdoor screening of Jean-Marc Vallée’s cult classic *C.R.A.Z.Y.* (2005) on September 19 at Molson Park.
