A squash is a symbol of fertility and grand harvest celebrations across the cultures of Europe and North America. It’s rounded, round, and the colors of the sun and the earth. And on Halloween, pumpkins become lanterns that ward off evil spirits and light up the houses where people party all night long. Literally, “trick or treat.”
Halloween pumpkins are those big orange ones. You cut off the top, scoop out the insides, dry the seeds in the oven, and cook the flesh into soup or cake. Then you carve a smile and two slightly mischievous eyes into them, and place them in front of your front door (or on your balcony).
It’s the peak of squash and pumpkin season. And in addition to the butternut squashes for soup that we’ll pick up at the market, we’re in the mood for a lovely stroll through the season’s colors and to bring back some beautiful pumpkins to Montreal.
Less than a 55-minute drive from downtown, there are three pumpkin patches to visit this fall.

PUMPKINVILLAGE—40 MINUTES FROM DOWNTOWN MONTREAL
It’s somewhere between a fairy tale that transforms the pumpkin patch into a magical world for children and an influencer’s paradise for the perfect pumpkin-picking photo, draped in a hand-knitted sweater that costs way too much. It’s wonderful.
There’s also a corn maze and pumpkin slurpies, but above all, there’s an art installation—an entire village built out of squash, to be enjoyed under the October sun.
Where? Benoit Vernier Farm, 560 69th Avenue, Saint-Zotique, Quebec, Canada, J0P 1Z0
When? Every weekend between September 12 and November 1, 2026, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Thanksgiving Monday, October 12, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
What? General admission for adults starts at $13.05 / tickets are available here, and you must purchase your tickets in advance (NO TICKET SALES ON SITE)

REID FARM—45 MINUTES FROM DOWNTOWN MONTREAL
Reid Farm in Sabrevois looks a bit like the “pumpkin patch” from all the Halloween “after-school specials” of our childhood. And also a bit like the setting of the remake of PUMPKINHEAD, R.L. STINE’S PUMPKINHEAD 2, which is coming soon to Tubi.
There’s also a corn maze where we’ll panic a little when we can’t find the kids anymore, just to get into the Halloween spirit before heading back to Montreal.
They have a rustic look, but there’s a wide variety ofcucurbits, from pumpkins to all kinds of squash. Pumpkins are serious business—and we bring home the squash for soup.
Where? 485 Route 133, Sabrevois
When? Open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
