It’s already August, and we’ve almost forgotten that it rained in June. We’ve forgotten what it’s like to be cold; we’ve adjusted our sleep schedules to dance in the streets all night long; we’ve seriously considered moving to the countryside after a wonderful weekend at the lake.
It’s the season for corn on the cob, back-to-school supplies, and the hottest, most beautiful days of summer in August. The air is sweet, the asphalt is scorching, and we want to make the most of it before school starts and the short, cool days of fall.
Just a half-hour drive from downtown Montreal—or 1 hour and 40 minutes by public transit—you can get lost in one of the world’s largest corn mazes at Ferme Marineau.
A PASSION FOR CORN ON THE COB
We wrote “maïs” to refer to the maze because it comes more naturally, but we could also say “blé d’inde,” even though it seems like that Quebec-specific term has sort of disappeared from the internet (unfortunately).
In Quebec, starting in late July, it’s sweet corn season—it goes by many names, but above all, it tastes like the best thing in the world when boiled, rolled in butter, sprinkled with salt, and eaten at abackyardbarbecueora neighborhood party.
MARINEAU FARM
The season started a little late this year in Quebec, but it’s in full swing at Ferme Marineau, an agritourism farm that grows and sells corn and periodically opens its fields to visitors.
The farm, which was established in 1921, also hosts a flower festival in the summer, a pumpkin patch in the fall, and has a market where you can buy their fruits, vegetables, and flowers, as well as a café and an ice cream shop. It’s aone-stop shop forthe best of the region’s agritourism.
And, of course, we can take a stroll through their corn maze—and maybe even get lost in it? From above, the maze looks like a green puzzle that makes youwant toget lost in it under the sun.
We’ll also be able to pick our own flowers in the farm’s flower fields and have a picnic at the exit of the maze.
