International Women’s Rights Day is a celebration of the women in our lives, of our favorite Montrealers, and a reminder that women’s voices (whether cis or trans, we’re talking about anyone who identifies as a woman) are still being silenced, all over the world, and benefit from being defended, protected and shouted from the rooftops.
There are a thousand ways to be a woman, and a thousand ways to celebrate them. We celebrate women, we learn about them, we listen to them, we watch them – and we bathe in the exceptional energy of sisterhood. And it feels good!
We have a few suggestions, but we encourage you to find ways to honor the women in your life every day.
1.Conference: What is Joyce Wieland’s legacy? at the MBAM
Joyce Wieland (1930-1998), whose work is the subject of an exhibition at the Musée des Beaux-Arts – Joyce Wieland: À coeur battant (until May 4) – is an iconic 20th-century Canadian visual artist and filmmaker.
An artist who has had a profound impact on art in Canada and internationally, she has used paper, fabric, sculptural elements and thousands of metres of film roll to speak about social justice, feminism and ecology.
Three Canadian artists will come together during this conference to pay tribute to him and discuss his impact on Quebec’s contemporary art scene. Artists Maryse Larivière, Julie Tremble and Marie Samuel Levasseur will be in conversation with Anne Grace , Curator of Modern Art at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, and Anne-Marie St-Jean Aubre, Curator of Contemporary Quebec and Canadian Art (1945 to present).
For artists, contemporary art enthusiasts and those who want to – finally! – give Joyce Wieland the place she deserves in the history books!
