In Quebec, the apple is more than a product; it’s a way of life. We eat apples all year round in Montreal—bags and bags of apples. That’s because the region is covered in orchards, and we have, of course, some of the best apples in the world. We’d trade our kingdom for a Red Delicious.
And Quebec’s apple capital isFrelighsburg, a 1 hour and 20-minute drive from downtown Montreal. To reconnect with nature—and with the summers of our childhood in the countryside, which we sorely miss at the end of a winter that’s far too long in Montreal—we head to Frelighsburg on a sunny Saturday morning.
Pack a basket, a tube of sunscreen, and a great playlist, because the region is best explored by car or bike.
Meat, apples, and the farmers’ market
Every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 6 through October 10, 2026, there’s a farmers’ market in the center of the village of Frelighsburg.
The market brings together local farmers and artisans from the area and the Eastern Townships. It’s a region rich in local produce: wine, livestock, honey, and fruits and vegetables.
A stroll through the hills of Frelighsburg
After a stop at the farmers’ market, with your basket filled with fruit, apples, and fresh eggs from that very morning, we recommend continuing your outing with a stop at the Domaine Héritage cider house.
Domaine Héritage has taken over an orchard with century-old trees (“venerable apple trees”) and makes cider using a carbon-negative approach (everything is reused, turned into biochar, forestry is regenerative, and hemp is planted to absorb CO2).
You can go taste the ciders at Domaine Héritage (with oysters) and hang out on the terrace in the sun before heading back…
