Montreal is a patchwork city made up of small, ever-evolving neighborhoods built by Montrealers—whether they’re just passing through, have adopted the city, or have lived here for generations. It’s a city incredibly rich in cultures, and these cultures are celebrated by everyone and by the communities that have settled on the island—whether this year or 100 years ago.
June 13 celebrates the culture of Polish immigrants who settled in Montreal, and it’s a bit like a big Polish block party at Jeanne-Mance Park.
Polski Piknik
“Polski Piknik” means “Polish Picnic” in Polish. This is the first time the piknik will be held at LaFontaine Park, and it’s the 7th edition. It has become a tradition in Montreal, for Montrealers of Polish descent and for everyone else—a celebration of Polish culture, cuisine, and immigrants.
Polish culture is rich, joyful, and colorful. This year, there will be local artists performing dance and music shows, as well as cultural workshops.
In recent years, the festival has featured performances by the White Eagle Folk Dance Academy and the Tatry Polish Folk Ensemble, as well as rock, blues, traditional folk, and turbo-folk music shows —and DJ sets lasting late into the night.
And, of course, the food will be fantastic. At “Resto Polski Piknik, ” there will be pierogi (small dumplings filled with cabbage, potatoes, or meat, served with fried onions and sour cream), the famous Polish sausages, smoked meat, sauerkraut , and pączki— doughnuts filled with cream or jam.
There will also bethe iconic Polish beer Żywiec, Polish vodka (to help with digestion), and, of course, vegetarian and non-alcoholic options.
