Kant, the philosopher and great proponent of the phenomenology of being, would have loved the installation by Paysages Studio. Being, becoming—Kant developed a theory of transcendental aesthetics to discuss human existence with and within nature. To put it simply, let’s explain the concept by saying that by feeling like moss, one can, briefly, become moss.
The installation, designed by Paysages Studio and presented as part of a partnership between PHI and Place des Arts, was originally called “Lit de Mousse.” In English, it’s called “Mossbed.”
You can go see it in one of Montreal’s hubs—the very busy and very under-construction Place des Arts. You step into the exhibition space, and almost immediately, you feel calm (speaking of nerves). More specifically, you become moss.

BECOMING MOSS
The DEVENIR MOUSSE experience is first and foremost a richly layered musical composition written by Sébastien Sauvageau. It embodies moss, inspired by the specific biology of moss—soaked in water, releasing spores, growing, and breathing.
In addition to the living composition—to be experienced with half-closed eyes and tingling palms—videos of moss accompany the experience. And afterward, there’s a mini-exhibition all about moss: local moss, mathematical moss, moss in Latin, and musical moss.
It’s not a spa or a sauna, but it has a similar effect. Moss is calming.
