This is the time of year when we make good resolutions and, perhaps, write them down in a diary or agenda. Stop smoking, stop drinking, go to more museums, slim down, learn Mandarin, find an unexplored inner grace and goodness…
Faced with a list of more or less realistic resolutions, you can’t help but think of Bridget Jones.
Helen Fielding’s heroine, played by Renée Zellweger in Bridget Jones’ Diary (2001), is an imperfect inspiration for our most deluded New Year’s resolutions.
“Resolution number one: Obviously will lose twenty pounds. Number two: Always put last night’s panties in the laundry basket. Equally important, will find sensible boyfriend to go out with and not continue to form romantic attachments to any of the following: alcoholics, workaholics, commitment phobic’s, peeping toms, megalomaniacs, emotional f*ckwits or perverts.
And especially will not fantasize about a particular person who embodies all these things
Bridget Jones doesn’t really keep her resolutions. But will we keep them in 2026? Will forcing a radical transformation every year really make us happier?
But, by the end of the movie, she’s cool and in love and has had an eventful year with a new job and lots of adventures – including a weekend in a castle with a convertible ride.
And, frankly, a year rich in emotions and experiences is all we can wish for 2026.
Resolution number 1: find a journal to write our resolutions in like Bridget Jones
It doesn’t have to be red, or have a little padlock, but it does have to be solid. Resolutions are serious business.
