Ah, the letter to Santa! When we were kids, the list of presents we asked (demanded) from the big man in the red coat was one of our most important essays of the year, along with our Mother’s Day cards and the dramatic stories of our crush of the moment in our diaries.
Some had been thinking about it for months, others diligently studied the Renaud-Bray and Toys R’ Us holiday catalogs, and some diligently noted the most elaborate Lego sets shown on Saturday morning TV during the ads between episodes of Scooby-Doo.
Once the list was made (some longer than others), a polite letter was written to Santa Claus – Dear Santa…– asking him with grace and gratitude to place under the family tree presents wrapped in colored paper containing our wish list.
Afterwards, it had to be sent – and since the 80s, we’ve known Santa’s address by heart in Canada…
HoH OhO
Canada Post, with whom we have a love-hate relationship depending on delivery speed, the timing of service strikes and the long walk from the cottage to the end of the road where the entire municipality’s post office lockers are located, is our best friend when it comes to the holiday season.
Since 1982, Canada Post has had a program to ensure that letters to Santa from Canadian children reach their destination: Santa’s elf workshop.
For over 40 years, postal workers have been transforming themselves into elves during the holiday season, and Santa’s address is broadcast every year on television (between two episodes of Bluey) with a jingle that we all sing in our heads when we read his postal code…
It’s a nostalgic Canadian tradition that we’re passing on to our mini-montrealers, to continue the tradition of writing to Santa.
