The theme of the 41st Vues d’Afrique Festival is Transmettre pour demain, and it’s 10 days of documentary and fiction films – with meetings with actors and directors, and immersion in Creole and African culture…
Montreal is an incredibly rich city – for artists, for young entrepreneurs, for families with kids, and for the coolest people from all over the world. While it’s smaller than New York, and perhaps not as cutting-edge as Berlin, the city is one of the creative, technological and artistic hubs of the modern world.
And one of the main reasons Montreal is so cool is that it’s a city of immigration and a melting pot of cultures, Aboriginal and Québécois-French, from the great waves of immigration of the 20th century, of political refugees, of those who came to study at Montreal’s great universities and stayed.
African and Creole cultures, which are multiple and incredibly rich, have a very important place in the cultural tapestry of Montreal, and it’s with a joy we can’t contain that we find the Vues d’Afrique festival in town at the beginning of April…
The program for the 41st edition
This year’s festival runs from April 3 to 13, with screenings of 86 films and TV series – documentaries, fiction, animation – produced in 32 foreign countries and Canada, in the Regards d’Ici category.
We’d also like to mention that, of the films presented at the festival, 47% were directed by women, which is exceptional – and we congratulate the festival on its choice to put women in the spotlight. In Hollywood, 5 years ago, the number of women in positions of power was 3% (for comparison).
With short programs, long programs and, for the most part, Canadian premieres, the festival’s screenings are a must-see, and a must-book.
There will also be encounters, which are central to the soul of this festival that promotes African and Creole cultures as much as cultural exchanges. At the Baobar, there will be festive evenings honoring several countries: Tunisia, Algeria, Haiti, Morocco, Rwanda, Madagascar and more.
