The Filministes Festival, which screens the best of feminist and queer cinema every winter in Montreal, is one of our favorite festivals of the year—for the short film screenings in theaters where we die of heat and joy, for the almost family-like atmosphere of the event, for the feminine rage that makes itself at home there like a big happy cat.
In 2026, the festival will celebrate its 9th edition, running from March 4 to 15.
Everything we’ll see at the Filministes Festival
This year, the Filministes Festival will screen 6 feature films, 67 short films, and 13 music videos.
This year’s feature films focus on recognizing invisible and marginalized people, as well as memories and remembrance. We are very excited to see Invisibles by Junna Chif, which portrays sex workers and the sexuality of people with disabilities, and Flana فلانة by Zahraa Ghandour—a quest 20 years after the sudden disappearance of a childhood friend.
We’re also really looking forward to the Roule Moi L’Clip evening, which will feature music videos by female, non-binary, and queer artists that will get us dancing—something we really need right now.
On March 8, International Women’s Rights Day, there will be an evening of short films —Sarah prefers short films—which we recommend seeing with friends because the Filministes Festival’s strength lies in its impeccable selection of short films. In the morning, for mini-feminists, there will also be a youth screening at the Cinéma Public.
For the sexiest among us, the Filminounes: Plaisirs Pornographiques film screening will take place on Thursday, March 5 at the Cinéma L’Amour.
And also…
Palestinian artist Yas Kanaan is exhibiting her work in an exhibition.Carrying Homeexplores the theme of Palestinian identity through resistance and belonging in the context of the diaspora. The opening is open to all and takes place on Wednesday, March 4.
