Ten surrealist films will be shown on the big screen of one of our favorite dark theaters in Montreal on Saturdays from February 21 to July 7.
Dreams, the unconscious, and the uncanny strangeness of the world as interpreted in cinema are at the heart of this program, which will be shown on Saturdays and repeated on the following Tuesdays.
It’s an opportunity to revisit the films that fascinated or gently traumatized us when we saw them (perhaps a little by mistake) on TV during a long summer afternoon. We’ve all had the same experience, haven’t we?
The films that will be shown on Saturdays are made to be dissected, interpreted, and debated over a drink —and for those who bring adate, bravo to you.
Surreal Saturdays
The Museum Cinema, with itsSurreal Saturdays program, follows on from the series of screenings that accompanied the Museum of Fine Arts’ exhibition of works by Alan Glass—the last of the surrealists.
The 10 films that will be screened from Saturday, February 21, to Saturday, July 4 (with an additional screening on the following Tuesday) are disturbing, sublime, and difficult to understand.
There are the great classics of cinema about consciousness and unconsciousness: Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris,Alain Resnais’ Last Year at Marienbad, andIngmar Bergman’s Persona, which is best viewed when you’re not too tense.

There are also new classics by directors who don’t like to explain their films at length: Lars VonTrier’s Melancholia, RichardKelly’s Donnie Darko, and LynneRamsay’svery punk and cult classicMorvern Callar.
Our ultimate recommendation is to go and see MichaelAlmereyda’s Nadja, a film that combines the story of Dracula with André Breton’s surrealist novel of the same name.
