November 1 and 2, the day after Halloween, is Mexico’s Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).
It’s a two-day festival where the living and the dead meet. It will be celebrated in Montreal with several events this weekend including an immersive experience that transports us into the Aztec underworld.
In Mexico, families give gifts to their dead and ancestors, inviting them to celebrate with them.
It’s one of the only celebrations of death and life that’s so joyous, and it’s a great way to honor and celebrate with the departed. It’s also a celebration full of symbolism and color, with make-up, marigolds and candles.
It’s a festival that combines pre-Hispanic indigenous traditions with European Catholic customs.
For Dia de los Muertos in Montreal, you have the chance to celebrate life, death and Mexican culture in an immersive experience…
Mictlán Experiencia
Guadalupe Ponce, who is organizing the experience in Montreal, describes it as “a symbolic journey through death, to celebrate life”.
It’s a journey through the Aztec underworld in a multi-sensory way through 5 symbolic places: Mictiamanalli (the Altar of the Dead), the Great Temple of the Underworld, Cihuacoatl (the Dark Hall), the Calaverada and the Teocalli (the House of the Gods).
The experience also includes a restaurant serving tortas, tamales and Mexican street food , a bar, a dessert counter and an artisanal souvenir store.
