It’s hot and sunny in August, and we read outdoors in Montreal. On a beach towel, at the beach, at a campsite, sitting on the benches in the Old Port, lying in the grass at Lafontaine Park, or on a patio with an iced latte .
August 12 is the day we’ll choose our late-summer reads—and it’s the day we’ll buy a book by a Quebec author.
ON AUGUST 12, I’M BUYING A BOOK BY A QUEBEC AUTHOR!
Because we’ll be reading the stories and prose of local authors, bookstores across Quebec organize an annual event to highlight and introduce readers to Quebec literature.
The day is called, quite simply, AUGUST 12: I’M BUYING A QUEBEC BOOK. It takes place in bookstores across Montreal and throughout Quebec, and it’s the day to buy a book you’ll read in the car, on the train, in your swimsuit, or around town—to make the vacation last just a little longer.
OUR FAVORITE BOOKSTORES IN MONTREAL
Montreal is a city of culture, just like New York or Paris, and on its streets we run into—sometimes without even realizing it—actors, writers, renowned journalists, activists, athletes, musicians… With the characteristic detachment of jaded city dwellers, of course.
However, it can sometimes be hard to find a bookstore where you can hang out—artistically—during a lunch break or a weekend afternoon. Our favorite bookstores all have a certain secret, intimate charm, and even though everyone knows about them, when you spend time there, you feel like the main character in a romantic comedy or a French vacation movie…
THE BEST PLACES TO READ A BOOK IN MONTREAL
There’s really nothing more romantic than having an afternoon to kill (which happens less and less often as we get older) and spending it in a café or on a terrace, lost in a book.
In recent years, we’ve seen a global resurgence in reading books (even if it’sromantasy like*Heated Rivalry*, even if it’s read on a Kindle or as an audiobook). Girls are reading the Nobel Prize in Literature winner just like Dua Lipa, andmillennials are rereading*Wuthering Heights* in the bath.
In Montreal, where the indoor and outdoor spaces of cafés and relaxation spots are transformed into works of art, it can sometimes be a little hard to find a place to sit for an hour or two and just read a book…
