While the MOMENTA contemporary art biennial is still in full swing in many of Montreal’s museum institutions, we’ve spent the hottest part of autumn hanging out at these exhibitions from a parallel world of truth.
Now that the weather’s cooling and the finance girlies have traded in their Lululemon for English trench coats, let’s visit their temple: Place Ville-Marie.
From October 15 to 19, a free mini-festival of contemporary and emerging art will take over the building; it’ s the 8th edition of the artch emerging art festival.
Place Ville-Marie and the artch emerging art festival
Because Place Ville-Marie is one of those downtown buildings vaguely recognized for its ring, we forget that it’s one of the first buildings and the beating heart of Downtown.
It’s the entry point to Montreal’s famous “underground city”, a postmodern building in the International style that makes Downtown the architectural UFO it is today, and it’s labyrinthine enough to have a semi-mysterious, semi-assuring aura.
It’s a place where people pass through, meet and enjoy a certain level of anonymity that’s quite conducive to creativity. And, in this spirit, the 8th edition of the artch emerging art festival is placed “under the sign of cooperation and doing things together”.
Program
From Wednesday, October 15 to Sunday, October 19, the Emerging Art Festival will present the work of 18 emerging Quebec contemporary artists who have received a grant, a series of workshops and mentoring from the art institution artch.
This year’s theme invited artists to think about the collective, collaboration and coexistence inside and outside the art world.
We don’t really know what to expect, but it’ll be fresh and a must-see, and we recommend dropping by-because it’s new and because we so need to think about the function of community and the collective right now.
