Fall is in full swing; the sun is still warm, and amid the cooler gusts of wind, yellow and red leaves rain down on Quebec’s trails.
Now’s the time to go for a walk in a light sweater in this season’s colors, and for an even cozier stroll, we recommend taking a walk with an alpaca—the softest of all Quebec farm animals.
We’re familiar with alpacas because we’ve been knitting their wool into scarves ever since the temperature drops below 10 degrees at night. At Domaine Poissant, an alpaca farm less than an hour’s drive from Montreal, you can take a walk with an alpaca—and from October 2 to November 2, the trail is decorated for Halloween.

THE ALPACAS OF DOMAINE POISSANT
The Domaine Poissant alpaca farm is at the foot of Mont Saint-Hilaire, in one of the region’s most beautiful spots in the fall. The corn and wheat fields are golden and towering, the trees are showering the road with red leaves, and the sky is vast—the entire region is bathed in sunshine. By car, it’s one of the prettiest routes to take to finally get out of Montreal for the weekend.
There are 200 alpacas at the estate—kind of like mini-camels with ultra-soft fur, big, gentle eyes, and the utter calm of a stoner from a ’90s movie. And, above all, alpacas make great walking companions. The farm refers to its alpaca walks as “animal-assisted therapy.” It’s a walk where you’re accompanied by an alpaca. You can whisper your secrets to it, touch its soft fur, and listen to its warm breath. You can bring the kids along—they’ll each have their own alpaca to walk.
For Halloween, the trail is decorated and features a candy hunt. You can also take an alpaca walk in the evening—the perfect way to end a fall day.
