If you want to sunbathe barefoot in the sand with a basket full of sandwiches this summer, we recommend heading out from Montreal—but not too far. Right next to the city’s scorching asphalt lies the beautiful Lac des Deux Montagnes, and nestled in the heart of a nature park is a lovely, almost completely untouched beach.
It’s a 45-minute drive from Montreal, and you can even get there by public transit in about two hours from downtown: take the REM to the Deux-Montagnes station, then bus 604. There’s nothing more romantic than taking the train with a big hat, a basket full of sandwiches and fruit, and a paperback to read on the beach.
The perfect summer afternoon is at the beach
Not to be confused with the town of Oka—the beach we’re talking about is locatedin Oka National Park and is therefore under the supervision and protection of SEPAQ. It’s a beach that deserves respect, and one that’s incredibly well-preserved in terms of its biodiversity and natural beauty.
You can have a picnic by the water or in the shade of the tall tree branches, and several wooden tables and charcoal grills are available for beachgoers.
You can also enjoy water sports by renting kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddleboards, and pedal boats. Rentals are available for 4 hours or for the whole day, and the rates are listed here.
You can also spend a few days in Oka National Park camping in a tent or in a small ready-to-camp cabin, which you can rent here.
