The movies are for everyone. Going to see a movie at the theater is a communal and deeply popular pleasure. It’s a classic activity for evenings with friends or family, first dates, and Sunday afternoons.
Yet, for the past few years, we’ve been calculating our movie outings with a sweaty brow and the cynical poetry of Orson Welles as he tallied his spending on books in the essay *Books Vs Cigarettes*. And, with a touch of despair and very little of Welles’s humor, we quickly realize that our movie expenses are astronomical.
Everyone says, “Since when has the movies been so expensive?” Montrealers’ pockets crinkle as they enter the theater, filled with Twizzlers and plastic bottles of water bought at the convenience store. Popcorn is an almost unattainable luxury that’s become a “social status” symbol.
To make the movies accessible to everyone again, SODEC is organizing a day with $3 tickets (tax included) at many Quebec cinemas. It’s wonderful—even if it’s just one day a month.

LOVE YOUR MOVIE THEATER AND $3 SUNDAYS
“Love Your Cinema” Sundays will take place every second Sunday of the month—starting November 8, 2026. Since SODEC is organizing the event, the films we’ll be able to see for $3 will be exclusively Quebec films.

Seats will be limited, so be sure to check the list of participating independent theaters to see which ones are near you. In Montreal, three of our favorite theaters are participating: Cinéma Beaubien, Cinéma Public, and Cinéma du Parc.
