The nights are getting darker and darker; Montrealers are afraid to cross the crosswalks haphazardly in Mile End—it’s “spooky season”—and there’s something very romantic about the crisp air that sends fallen leaves raining down onto the streets.
The artistic impulse that comes with the most melancholic season of the year—the death of nature is, after all, quite dramatic—brings with it stories of ghosts and spectres to be told in hushed tones just before midnight.
At the MAC (the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art), ghosts are in the mix for two evenings of film and video screenings by artists—on October 6 and 9, 2026.

ART FILMS AND GHOST STORIES
The MAC—its satellite location at Place Ville-Marie while construction on its downtown museum is still underway—is partnering with the social contemporary art organization KADIST and GEM LAB to explore history, melancholy, transmission, and ghosts. The curators of this special program are Mojeanne Behzadi, curator at the MAC, and Marie Martraire, collection director at KADIST and a member of GEM Lab.
The selected works, which will be screened over two evenings (one PG-rated, one for ages 18 and up), come from the MAC’s collections, KADIST’s collections, and elsewhere. There will be film essays, archival reenactments, animated films incorporating archival footage, semi-fictional narratives, and personal experiences.
The theme is the invisible—ghosts in all their forms, the haunted houses that are our minds, and the stories and folklore that speak of invisible people.
There will be works by Patrick Bernatchez, Yin-Ju Chen, Stephanie Comilang, Louis-Philippe Eno, Miljohn Ruperto, Wu Tsang, Paras Vijan, and Bo Wang.
