Spring has slowly begun in Montreal, and now that we’ve traded our down jackets for waterproof trench coats, we’re seriously thinking about summer.
Even though we have six months of winter in Montreal, we have a scorching summer just like everyone else, with heat waves, thunderstorms, and long weeks of agonizing drought. Summer begins with the Summer Solstice on June 21, 2026, and ends with the Autumnal Equinox on September 22, 2026.
And, according to the Farmer’s Almanac, the summer of 2026 will be very hot and very dry in Montreal.

An almanac is a “popular book published annually that includes a calendar along with scientific or practical information,” according to the online Larousse dictionary. Almanacs in their current form have medieval origins. They also existed in Ancient Rome, the Middle East (the word has Arabic origins), and Russia.

Since 1915, Quebec has had an almanac: the Almanach du Peuple, which no longer seems to exist.
Finally, we’ve just learned that it’s apparently pronounced “al-ma-na” on its own, with the “k” sound used only when linked to another word…
