Summer has finally arrived, and with it the crowds on the beaches…
Everyone we’ve asked has given us a list of secret beaches, the ones we don’t tell other people the address of(sorry) because once they’re “discovered” we won’t be able to set foot on them without having to step over a family eating baloney sandwiches and blasting music.
Fortunately, we’re not afraid to drive a few hours to find the beach of the summer, the one that’s not crowded, on which to lie in the sun between two swims in the clear water…
A hidden beach, far from the crowds
Located just a few hours from Montreal, Tobermory is the perfect place for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city without going too far.
Nestled in the heart of lush nature, it offers an idyllic setting in which to recharge your batteries. Huge skies? Check. Tall, forest-scented trees for shade? Check. Crystal-clear water with white rocks to pick from underneath? Check.
The lake beach
Those who want to relax in the sun with a book and those who can’t stand still in summer will be happy, because it’s secret but not far from everything…
Kayak and paddleboard enthusiasts will be delighted by the calm, peaceful waters, ideal for a stroll on the water.
Tobermory Beach is known as the scuba diving center of the Great Lakes, thanks to the Fathom Five National Marine Park. For the more athletic, there are hiking trails in the vicinity offering routes of varying levels of difficulty, to discover the natural beauty of the area.
The water is shallow, and there are picnic tables under the trees for resting in the shade and refreshing the kids between freshwater dips.
How do we get there?
Okay, Tobermory is a 9-hour drive from Montreal, but it could be a destination you reach as part of a road-trip that makes several stops, or one of the pit-stops for those touring the Great Lakes this summer.
On the road, there’s Ottawa, Toronto, Algonquin National Park, Kawartha Highlands National Park and Cornwall – with a little preparation, you can get a few days in Ontario for a change of scenery while traveling in Canada.
Practical tips
To make the most of your day at the beach, don ‘t forget to bring everything you need: sun cream, bug spray, hats, umbrellas and, of course, snacks and drinks to keep hydrated.
And don’t forget to respect the environment by taking your garbage with you, and following local conservation guidelines.
Have a great summer!
