You’ll never say no to a week’s vacation in Europe in spring. Terraces, lemons, hot city cobblestones, southern beaches…
From May 2025, Canadian passport holders will need an ETIAS authorization to travel to any of the 30 Schengen countries.
This decision is designed to improve border security and the experience of travelers from abroad in European countries.
What is an ETIAS authorization?
ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System .
The ETIAS authorization is an authorization to enter the country, a visa waiver that makes it easier to identify people entering European territory.
It is valid for travel in Europe for a maximum of 90 days over a 3-year period.
How do I apply?
You will need to apply online and fill in a form with your personal details, passport number, as well as a possible criminal record and travel to conflict zones in recent years.
The application process is done entirely online on the official ETIAS website, or on the ETIAS application. The application will cost you 7 euros ($10.38 CAD), with payment exemptions for minors and senior citizens.
Don’t forget your passport when you go to Europe either, and any other documents (or visas, depending on your country of arrival and departure) you need to travel, because the ETIAS won’t be enough to cross borders. It does not guarantee entry into the country.
When do we apply?
As early as possible! Official websites recommend that you apply even before you book your vacation flights and hotels.
The ETIAS application – as indicated on the site – should be processed within minutes of filling in the form, and a reply should be given within 4 days, but if you are asked for additional information the waiting period may be extended by 14 days.
If you’re invited to take part in an interview, the waiting period could be extended to 30 days, so you might as well apply as soon as you get the urge to spend a week in Europe!
How long is it valid for?
The ETIAS is valid for short stays of up to 90 days out of a total period of 180 days, and the authorization is valid for three years or until your travel document expires.
And don’t forget! Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your date of departure from the European country, otherwise you may be refused entry…
Come on, it’s all right! It’s easier than it looks!
Happy European vacations!
