One of the best diners in Montreal for simple, ’60s-style dining is the NDG Luncheonette. Black-and-white tiles, a super-friendly counter that opens up to the outdoors in the summer, and all the diner classics just like in the good old days—it’s one of the city’s best-kept secrets.
NDG LUNCHEONETTE: THE ART OF DINING AND A FAMILY HISTORY
The NDG Luncheonette has the vintage aesthetic of a ’60s diner, but it wasn’t that long ago that it was opened by cousins Sophia and Dillon Griffin, who grew up in the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce (NDG) neighborhood and set up their diner right in the heart of it.
It quickly became a third place to go—for pancakes on Sunday mornings and burgers on Wednesday lunchtimes. And to stop by for a coffee, often.
The walls are covered with family photos and pictures of boxing matches—as you’d expect from a family of boxers.
ON THE MENU
The menu at the NDG Luncheonette is very classic: smash burgers, hot dogs, pancakes, Waldorf salad, eggs, and shrimp rolls. But the focus is on the ingredients—sourced as locally as possible and of the highest quality. And, of course, the coffee is exceptional.
The menu is seasonal, always very fresh, and reasonably priced. You wouldn’t want to leave a diner with a stomachache from the bill…
