Okay, winter isn’t over yet. We know it, because our feet are still cold and our ears are red from the wind. The streets are still slippery, and the tips of our shoes are stained with salt and the nasty mixture of snow and everything else lying around on Montreal sidewalks. Our skin is dry, our shoulders are tense, and we’re a little dramatic about the weather.
But—miracle!—because the weather will get milder in March. Today is February 19, 2026, and according to the forecast from The Weather Network, the mercury will stay above zero during the day starting on March 6, 2026. That’s in 15 days.
Mild weather, the miraculous groundhog, and the Farmers’ Almanac
February 2, 2026, was Groundhog Day. And on February 2, 2026, Fred the groundhog in Gaspésie did not see his shadow. So, of course, we predicted an early arrival of spring in Quebec and—finally!—the end of another painful winter in Montreal.
Other groundhogs have also made their predictions.Punxsutawney Phil in the US saw his shadow and predicted six more weeks of winter. In Nova Scotia, Sam from Shubenacadie couldn’t predict anything because of a snowstorm. We didn’t really listen to them because we really want it to be spring.

The Farmers’ Almanac, which predicted (with great accuracy) a chaotic winter with rain, snow, and very, very cold temperatures, has announced that March will be a solid transition to spring.
At the beginning of the month, temperatures will still be below freezing, with highs between -6 degrees Celsius and zero degrees Celsius. By the end of the month, we’ll have gained almost 15 degrees, with highs between 4 and 6 degrees Celsius.
We’re going to be watching the weather very, very closely…
