It’s official: Montreal is cooler than New York… We suspected as much, of course. Montreal is a city of gastronomy, culture, fashion and nature, increasingly sought-after by today’s hottest artists and innovators.
Over the past few years, Montreal has seen some exceptional exhibitions, chefs, taste-makers and evenings of interesting and talented people… We’re very lucky, because when we get out of our apartments (not very big, we won’t lie about that) and wander the streets of Montreal, we feed our souls and never get bored.
Time Out magazine has just released its list of the coolest streets in the world, and in fifth place is Montreal’s Sherbrooke Street West…

Sherbrooke Street West
Sherbrooke Street West is one of the city’s biggest streets –as big as an avenue, with lots of cars and the horns and traffic that go with them. It’s the second-longest street on the island.
It’s a street of culture; it’s home to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, McGill University, the McCord Stewart Museum, the Redpath Museum, luxury hotels like the Sofitel and the Ritz…
But above all, it’s a street that allows Montrealers to move from one neighborhood to another; the street crosses Westmount, downtown, the entertainment district…

Our pick for Montreal’s coolest street
…but it doesn’t look like the coolest street in Montreal.
To stroll around and experience the best of the city, we’ve got three streets to recommend instead (make of that what you will, Time Out).
- rue Saint-Viateur Ouest – Montreal’s oldest and coolest cafés, Canada’s best bagels, boutiques of small emerging brands and lots of charm.
- rue Saint-Paul Ouest – one of the Old Port’s most beautiful streets, home to magazine cafés, the PHI contemporary art center and some of Montreal’s most delightful architecture.
- Boulevard Saint-Laurent – a very long street that runs from disco bars to Michelin-starred delis, thrifts and the city’s most fashionable art galleries.
Enjoy the ride!
