On Monday, May 18, the Montreal Canadiens men’s hockey team and the Victory women’s team played on the same night. The Canadiens men faced the Buffalo Sabres, and the Victory women took on the Ottawa Charge.
It’s a big week for sports in Montreal, because in addition to hockey, there’s the Formula 1 Grand Prix. For newcomers and those who want to enjoy one of the biggest sporting events of the year, a little planning is required.
News – the Montreal Canadiens
The Canadiens are playing for the National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup, and by eliminating the Sabres on Monday, they advance to the NHL Eastern Conference Finals—the third round of the playoffs against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Each playoff round can consist of 4 to 7 games, and a team must win 4 games to advance to the next round.
It’s quite exceptional, because the Montreal Canadiens are (roughly) 8 games away from winning the Stanley Cup. They have left;
- the playoff round against the Carolina Hurricanes (Eastern Conference Final)
- if the Canadiens win, they’ll face the winner of the Western Conference Final (the Vegas Golden Knights or the Colorado Avalanche) in the Stanley Cup Final
The Canadiens’ next games are against the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. (in Raleigh, North Carolina) and on Saturday, May 23, 2026 (in Raleigh, North Carolina).
The Montreal Canadiens (CH) were the last Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup 33 years ago, in 1993. A victory for the Canadiens would be exceptional, miraculous.
News – Montreal Victory
The Montreal Victory is Montreal’s professional women’s hockey team, and they’re in the Walter Cup final of the Professional Women’s Hockey League (LPHF) against the Ottawa Charge.
Just like in the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, you have to win several games to advance in a series.
To win the Walter Cup, the Victoire team must win three out of five games—so far, the Victoire has won two of the round’s games and the Ottawa Charge has won one.
The next (and perhaps final and winning) game for the Montreal Victory is tonight, Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 7 p.m. (at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa).
