Ask anyone: the best parties in Montreal are at the “Satosphère.” The dome of the Société des Arts Technologiques de Montréal (SAT), inaugurated in October 2011, is 11.5 meters high and 18 meters in diameter. It has a modular screen configuration of 180 degrees or 210 degrees vertically and 360 degrees horizontally. There are 8 video projectors and 93 full-spectrum speakers and 5 channels for bass frequency transmitters.
Despite the highly technical details of how the dome works, it has the poetic vocation of being a vehicle for “immersive” works of art—which can be experienced, heard, and seen in 360 degrees. Since the dome was built, 180 works (films, performances, installations, concerts) have been produced at the SAT itself as part of its residency program.
And at the end of March, there will be a five-day festival of “immersive” films under the dome at the SAT: SAT FEST 2026.
SAT FEST 2026
Cinema made to be projected under a dome is called “fulldome cinema. “ It is a fairly new and vaguely obscure form of cinema because it is so vast. Among the 52 short films that will be screened at the Satosphere during the festival, there are fiction, abstract, sensory, and experimental works…
In addition to the film program—32 in competition, 20 in special screenings— there will be panels, workshops, discussions, and networking activities for fulldome artists and those inspired by this new frontier of cinema. The next step is to play the stories directly in the audience’s heads, right?
To end the festival on a high note, the dome will be showing films at the Off-Dômesicle party on March 28, 2026, starting at 10 p.m. and going late into the night. There will be a lineup of 100% Montreal drum & bass, deep house, and UK grooves music. For more information, click here!
After the festival ends, the 6 immersive short films that won awards at SAT FEST 2026 will be screened under the SAT dome on 18 dates between March 31 and April 29, 2026. For more information, click here!
