It’s going to be hot this summer in Montreal’s parks, and we’ll be hanging out on the grass until nightfall, with friends and drinks, with a loved one on a blanket, late enough to hear the frogs croaking and to see the fireflies flickering in the bushes.
But that doesn’t mean we’re going to spend the summer staring into space, thinking of nothing—though it does feel good to set aside the hottest afternoons of the year to do just that a little. After dark, during the hot summer months, we’ll also be able to attend free film screenings that will make us smarter.
Between June 25 and August 28, 2026, Funambules Médias is organizing “Cinema Under the Stars”—43 films or short documentary programs screened in Montreal’s parks.
Movies under the stars
The Cinema Under the Stars lineup features a selection of social documentaries and short films (of social documentaries), and being able to watch them as a community, alongside all the intellectuals in the neighborhood, is quite lovely.
The opening film of this edition is *Steal This Story, Please!* ( 2025) by Lia Tessin and Carl Deal, making its Quebec premiere. The documentary follows independent journalist Amy Goodman over 30 years of her career—on the ground—highlighting the importance of independent journalism in the modern media landscape.
It will be at Wilfrid Laurier Park, and the opening night will begin at 7 p.m.
