Last week, on October 22, the “Survival Manual in the Dating Jungle” was released by the tongue-in-cheek sexologist in 12 Kanica heels on the floor of the Hôtel Saint-Paul, and we stopped by to pick up a copy…
Montreal has the reputation of being one of the hardest cities in the world to date – or in Canada, depending on who you ask. Between telecommuting, all those who got married at 22 and the city’s hippie spirit, it’s true that the task of finding a lover before the snow starts to fall sometimes seems impossible.
Fortunately, this fall, we’re going to have some -professional- help.

Love & the city
When Kanica talks about her book (and herself, because her manual is structured around ten of her relationships-10 dates) she says it’s like Sex and the City with less sex and less city.
During the evening, she gives a presentation on her background, the process of writing the book and talks about her interview on Tout le Monde en Parle, for which she asked the make-up artist to “transform her into an Asian JLo”.
Kanica has the high heels, rapid-fire delivery and tongue-in-cheek humor of Carrie Bradshaw ( Sex and the City’ssex columnist) but, unlike her, we believe she’s written a book that can really help single Montrealers find love. Or, at least, someone warm to spend the long, cold winter months with…
She’s a couple’s therapist, trained in sexology, and in addition to the juicy stories of her romantic life, she gives us life lessons (some of which are more or less easy to swallow) so that we can fall – well! – in love for real.
Love is good – but where do you find it?
With a cocktail in hand and a mass of overexcited people all wanting to ask for advice or just congratulate Kanica after the book presentation, I manage to exchange a few words with her as she autographs my copy in fuchsia marker.
I ask her where to meet someone in Montreal-because it’s all very well to grow emotionally to be with someone, but you also have to find someone sexy and available to date.
Kanica recommends an approach that, frankly, sounds a lot like our happiest friends’ greatest love stories-and that’s to hang out (with intent) in;
- running clubs or chess clubs for those who don’t like running
- parks
- the supermarket
- the street
- the bar or café
The bottom line is that Montrealers had better drop their headphones and look up, because it seems that love is in the air in Montreal wherever you look…
And of course, when that happens, we’ll be ready-because we’ve read the book!
Manuel de survie dans la jungle du dating de Kanica is published by Michel Lafon Québec, and is available everywhere!
