Summer nights are balmy in Montreal, and even the movies will be shown outdoors. This summer, as in recent years, the super-cool independent cinema Cinéma Public and the art center Le Livart are teaming up to create an open-air (art house) cinema.
From June 14 to August 24, 2026, we’ll be able to sunbathe in the afternoon and, as night falls, treat ourselves to some of the most interesting and wonderfully bizarre independent films in the history of cinema.
And since it’s summer—and even if we’re not on vacation, we feel more relaxed—the Dieu du Ciel! brasserie will have its bar open during the screening evenings.
Bleu Soir – indie lineup to watch under the stars
The lineup for this summer film series is for cinephiles and for those who want to travel—because American blockbusters are fun for five minutes, but cinema is Art with a capital A.
The films to be screened in the Livart courtyard at dusk are drawn from the best of international independent cinema—Lucrecia Martel’s Argentine film La Ciénaga ( 2001), Chocolat ( 1988) by Claire Denis, the cult classic Waiting for Guffman ( 1996) by Christopher Guest, Drunken Noodles ( 2025) by Lucio Castro, and My Own Private Idaho ( 1991) by Gus Van Sant.

There will also be screenings of Canadian and Quebec films, including the very sweet *The Company of Strangers* ( 1990) by Cynthia Scott and *Oublie pas le gruau* ( 2025) by Olivier Godin, which will serve as the opening film.
