It’s almost back-to-school time in Montreal, and with it, the air will get cooler, the leaves will start to turn red and we’ll be taking our last dips in the lakes of the year, drying off with a hot chocolate by the fire…
And every early October, it’ s the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma in Montreal. This year marks the 54th edition of the festival, which runs from October 8 to 19, 2025.
Following the death of filmmaker David Lynch last spring, the festival will dedicate its All-Nighter – a beloved tradition for cinephiles and night owls alike – to one of his most mysterious and delightful works: Twin Peaks .
“The Big Night, David Lynch, Twin Peaks
In addition to its program of world and Canadian premieres (fiction, documentary, animation), every year the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma de Montréal organizes a “Grande Nuit”.
It’s a sleepless night dedicated to a director, a film, a film series or a TV series –something magical and iconic in cinema and pop culture.
In the past, the “Big Night” has been dedicated to the Alien film series, Jaws and the Mad Max post-apocalyptic road movies.
This year, for the 54th edition of the festival, the night will be dedicated to David Lynch’s TV series Twin Peaks. And, of course, we’ll be there.
On the night of October 11 to 12, in the Agora du Coeur des Sciences at UQÀM, we’ll be bringing along a thermos of coffee (black) and a small blanket to watch Twin Peaks from a deckchair.
The 8 episodes of the series will unfold, and in between there will be quizzes, burlesque performances and surprises. After all, owls aren’t what they seem…
When day breaks, we’ll have a complimentary breakfast before heading out into the Montreal streets in the wee hours of the morning, draped in the unmistakable mystery and aura of Twin Peaks.

The Festival du Nouveau Cinéma de Montréal has also announced its opening and closing films…
Opening the 54th edition of the festival will be the animated film Space Cadet by artist and filmmaker Kid Koala.
“From her earliest childhood, Céleste has been lovingly raised by Robot, her faithful guardian. Now an astronaut, she’s off to explore the stars on her very first mission, while Robot, left alone on Earth, takes comfort in their fondest memories.” – FNC
Closing the festival is Marie Brassard’s Le Train .
“In 1960s Quebec, Agathe, an asthmatic child with a vivid imagination, grows up in an isolated suburb, lulled by the sounds of a nocturnal train that awakens in her the idea of an elusive elsewhere. Her mother Thérèse (the immense Larissa Corriveau), a secretary by day and an artist by night, weaves a tender, offbeat everyday world with her friend Maurice, a flamboyant couturier. As a teenager, Agathe meets Frank (Lennikim), a young writer whose dreams of a Japanese heroine resonate strangely with her…”- FNC
