A Brief History of the Théâtre Cartier
To understand the soul of the Théâtre Cartier, we must go back to the late 19th century. Originally, the site was home tothe Saint-Vincent-de-Paul Church, built in 1878 to serve the working-class community of the Sainte-Marie neighborhood. Tragically destroyed by a devastating fire in 1924, the building rose from the ashes in 1928 under the guidance of renowned Quebec architect Ludger Lemieux, who designed the imposing structure we admire today.
Deconsecrated and then abandoned as religious influence waned, the building avoided the grim fate of demolition thanks to a bold vision: to preserve its architectural heritage by transforming it into a vibrant event space. A heartfelt tribute to its history, it was renamed “Théâtre Cartier” as a nod to its proximity to the Jacques-Cartier Bridge.
