While Montreal’s major theaters are taking a little summer break before shifting to immersive theater programs for the fall, culture itself is heading out to the open air!
Starting tomorrow, the theater takes the stage right under the stars with the long-awaited return of Shakespeare-in-the-Park. Presented by Repercussion Theatre, Le CAM on Tour, and UnCanon Theatre, it’sthe must-see free event of the summer —the perfect way to relax in a park while enjoying a spectacular show.
A classic reimagined with a modern twist
This year, *The Winter’s Tale* will captivate audiences in the city’s parks from July 21 to August 15. The story? An intense journey into the heart of jealousy, paranoia, and forgiveness, where a king tears his own family apart before seeking redemption. Neither quite a tragedy nor entirely a comedy, it’s a modern work that speaks of resilience and hope where you least expect it.
For the occasion, director Lydie Dubuisson pulls out all the stops: the play is reimagined with a striking Nubian-futuristic aesthetic, featuring a cast drawn entirely from Black communities. It’s a brilliant way to connect Shakespeare’s text with our current issues of systemic justice and power.
