After spending the week running from meeting to meeting along the windy avenues of downtown Montreal, crushed by 50-storey concrete and glass skyscrapers, we deserve a little old-world charm this holiday season.
Unfortunately, we don’t all have the time to go away for a whole weekend, or to go very far away, and some of us have neither a car nor the cash to spend on renting a Communauto that will shake in the early winter wind during the 3-hour drive between Montreal and Quebec City.
But we’re all entitled to the romanticism of cobbled streets, grey cut-stone buildings, quirky lampposts at the end and little village squares that smell of fir needles and mulled wine…
For that, we’ve got an alternative to the Quebec City Christmas market, and one that’s much closer to Montreal – and accessible by public transport!
Terrebonne and Old Terrebonne
The city of Terrebonne is considered a suburb of Montreal, but on the land (not the island) and is at the center of the MRC des Moulins. It’s an ever-expanding city that, as of 2014, is the tenth most populous in the country.
Preserved since the 18th and 19th centuries, and back to the days when Terrebonne was a seigniory, one neighborhood is considered one of the richest for colonial heritage in Quebec: Vieux-Terrebonne.
The district resembles the finest streets of Old Quebec for charm and cultural interest, and is only a few minutes’ drive from Montreal and Laval.
From downtown Montreal, the historic district of Vieux-Terrebonne is about 45 minutes by car and about 1h30 by public transit. Take the orange line to Montmorency station, then the exo 19 Terrebonne-Mascouche train to Autoroute 25/J.-S.-Archambault (Île Saint-Jean).
Vieux-Terrebonne Christmas Market

The Marché de Noël de Terrebonne brings together the crafts and traditions of local artisans in a street lined with European-style cottages.
We’ve got three weekends (plus Fridays) to go during the month of December 2025.
You’ll be able to meet Santa Claus on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m., take part in mini-wreath-making workshops on Saturdays from 3 p.m., enjoy an old-fashioned carousel and lots of holiday spirit…
