For 10 days, Montreal’s Cinéma du Parc will vibrate to the sounds (and ultra-rich visuals) of Latin cinema – from Spain and Latin America.
It’s the 13th edition of the Montreal Latino Film Festival, and this year it runs from April 17 to 27.
This year, some twenty films by filmmakers from eight countries will be presented during the festival. We’ll be seeing films from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and this year’s featured country: Spain.
We can’t wait to see the documentary Tardes de Soledad by Catalan “enfant terrible” Albert Serra (in French, Un Après-midi de Solitude), a portrait of the famous Peruvian bullfighter Andrés Roca Rey – the film is described as presenting a transgressive and contemporary vision of bullfighting through one of its absolute stars. It will be screened at Cinéma du Parc on April 21.
We’ll also be showing films that won awards at the Berlinale, Sundance and Cannes… These are films that won’t necessarily be shown in Canadian cinemas.
This is your chance to experience these films on the big screen (and with a bag of popcorn on your lap), so you don’t have to wait for them to be released on platforms to see them.
We can’t wait to see them all, but we’ve got our heart set on Eureka by Argentinian filmmaker Lisandro Alonso , which has been described by the Guardian as “weirdly hypnotic and beautiful in its own way” and stars Viggo Mortensen and Chiara Mastroiani. It will be screened at Cinéma du Parc on April 17 and 24.
For a family screening , we recommend snapping up tickets early to see Hola Frida, an animated film about the young Frida Kahlo growing up in Coyoacan, Mexico – and her vivid imagination and creative energy. It will be shown at Cinéma du Parc on April 18, 19 and 20.
