Since we’re already sick of the “digital vs. movie theater vs. IMAX” debate over summer blockbusters, and since we want to toss our phones into the Canal at least once a day, read books, and eat ice cream without knowing what time it is, we’re going to take advantage of the season to go back in time.
Just a short 45-minute drive from downtown Montreal, we can turn off our smartphones, buy a large Diet Coke with plenty of ice for our sweetheart to impress them, and head to the “drive-in” just like in the movies from the ’80s…
The Saint-Eustache Drive-In Theater
It’s the drive-in with the most retro design in the area: red and white, linoleum flooring in the snack bar, a neon sign, pinball machines, pink tile, and popcorn. But it’s also the largest and most modern in Canada.
There are five screens, all showing double features, and plenty of parking all around.
Plus, there’s an ice cream shop, a flea market, and arcades: we can spend the afternoon there, pick up a vase, throw a blanket in the back of the pickup truck (or the imported Fiat—whichever you prefer), and watch a movie as night falls.
It’s incredibly romantic, nostalgic, and it’ll really do you good this summer. We recommend booking in advance and arriving a little before sunset so you have time to stroll around and soak up the atmosphere.
Of course, we’ll have left our phones in the glove compartment.
