April 15, 2026, is Canadian Cinema Day—a day when the whole country celebrates cinema with special events, free screenings, and local films premiering for the first time.
The theme of this 13th edition of Canadian Cinema Day is “Let’s Dream Together. “ It’s also a way to promote Canadian and Quebec cinema abroad.
In total, there will be nearly 2,000 free screenings across Canada and 150 internationally. Among the Canadian films screened, there will be 60 Quebec films. Les Furies by Mélanie Charbonneau, Mille secrets, mille dangers by Philippe Falardeau, Bergers by Sophie Deraspe, Mile End Kicks by Chandler Levack, Les Bons Débarras by Francis Mankiewicz, La petite et le Vieux by Patrice Sauvé, Mlle Bottine by Yan Lanouette Turgeon, and Le Chat dans le sac by Gilles Groulx.

Sophy Romvari’s coming-of-age film, which follows a Hungarian family on Vancouver Island during a bittersweet summer, premiered at the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma de Montréal last year.

For those who missed it, this is a chance to see it for free, presented by the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma as a highlight.

Les Furies ( 2025) by Mélanie Charbonneau at the Langelier Library
Les Furies is a female-led, feminist, Quebec film that tellsthe story of an underground roller derby team made up of hockey players who lost their ice timedue to the formation of a semi-pro men’s hockey team in the city.

The film was directed by Mélanie Charbonneau from a screenplay by Gabrielle Côtéand features atrulydelightfulcast; Gabrielle Côté, Anne-Élisabeth Bossé, Antoine Bertrand, France Castel, Juliette Gosselin, Debbie Lynch-White, Samantha Fins, Sandrine Brisson, Nathalie Doummar, Ximena Ferrer, Aurélia Arandi-Longpré, Lyraël Dauphin, Antoine Pilon, and Maxime de Cotret.
The film will be screened for free.

Subjects of Desire ( 2021) presented by Labia Cinematica
Jennifer Holness’s documentary *Subjects of Desire* explores how Black women are idealized for their beauty, imitated, and envied. The film takes place in part during the 50th anniversary of the Miss Black America Pageant, a beauty pageant created as a political act to celebrate Black beauty.
