With the holidays fast approaching and the nights getting longer in Montreal, we’ll (finally) have time to slow down and hang out at home in our pyjamas on evenings and weekends without experiencing the FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) characteristic of Montreal weekends.
If you’re looking for a little bookstore for the holidays – and the months after, because winter is looooong in Montreal – you’ve got some excellent options…
First, we can go to the Salon du Livre, which runs from November 19 to 23, 2025, at the Palais des Congrès de Montréal, and visit the city’s bookstores for new releases by our favorite authors. We can also visit the coolest bookstores in Montreal-and we’ve got a list here! And of course, we can use our library card and borrow a book (or ten) at a time.
But at the end of November, we’ll be going book shopping at a huge used book sale in Lachine, where everything is $1!
A thousand books for $1
Lachine’s big used book sale kicks off on November 29, 2025, and you’ll be able to drop by the Saul-Bellow library every day until December 8, 2025.
There will be over a thousand titles to buy at $1/piece, and in addition to books we’ll also be able to find documentaries, CDs, DVDs, audiobooks, comics and sheet music. As well as starting our own personal bookshop of 2026, it’s the perfect opportunity to make our Christmas presents on a budget and with virtually zero carbon footprint.
The stock of titles on sale will be renewed every day, so we recommend dropping in a few times to rummage through the boxes and find some treasures. Of course, we all want to be the one who finds the most beautiful edition of Wuthering Heights to reread before the release of Emerald Fennel’s film starring Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie, but we can’t guarantee anything…
